To establish a diamond’s value, we examine each of the 4Cs: cut, clarity, carat weight, and color. The combination of the 4Cs determines the value of a your diamond. For example, a colorless diamond will have a high value, but if it lacks clarity, or is not well cut, the value will go down. The finest stones are the rarest stones, and the rarest stones have the highest value.

  • Larger diamonds are rare occurrences in nature, which in turn, increases their value. What also makes a larger diamond desirable is that it shows off a stone’s color and cut to its best advantage.

A diamond’s size is measured in carat weight, and each carat is equal to 100 points. A .75 carat diamond is the same as a 75-point diamond or a 3/4 carat stone.

  • Nearly all natural diamonds contain identifying characteristics, yet are invisible to the naked eye. Under the scrutiny of our jeweler’s lenses, tiny crystals, clouds or feathers-called inclusions-can be seen. Flawless diamonds contain none of these inclusions, and as such, have a higher value.

Diamonds with very small inclusions are graded as VVS1 or VVS2. The larger the inclusion, the lower the grade, all the way to I3, which have inclusions that can be see with the naked eye.

  • Diamonds are graded by color, starting at D-the highest grade-all the way through the alphabet. While many diamonds appear colorless, they may actually have subtle yellow or brown tones. These diamonds are less area and less valuable. To appreciate the beauty of each stone, compare diamonds side by side with one of our jewelers.

  • A well-cut diamond radiates fire and light. It offers the greatest brilliance and value. While the other three Cs-carat, cut, and clarity-are determined by nature, the fourth C, cut, lies in the hand of a master craftsman. When a diamond is cut to good proportions, light will reflect from one facet to another, and disperse brilliance through the top of the stone. Diamonds that are cut too deep or too shallow lose light that spills through the bottom, resulting in a less beautiful stone.
